Lost: Meet Kevin Johnson

I loved this episode. I’ve only watched it once so far, but I think we learned a lot.

Ben vs. The Universe reinforced

My theory still stands, and I think this week brought more evidence -- at least in the way the game is being played. Ben has harnessed the power of the island and is trying to outfox the Universe by staying a few moves ahead of its course-correcting counter-moves (i.e. the cosmic game of chess).

Case in point:
Mr. Friendly’s proof (the Widmore File)

Remember a few weeks ago when Ben had Locke open his safe and pull out a video tape with Widmore on it? Wasn’t that just a little too convenient, that this tape just happened to be sitting there in Ben’s safe at the exact moment Ben needed it? The same sort of thing happened in tonight’s episode with Michael and Mr. Friendly.

Here is what is happening:

Michael asks Mr. Friendly for proof against Widmore. Mr. Friendly’s consciousness instantly travels back in time and instructs someone to prepare a file and leave it on the table in his penthouse. His consciousness then returns to the very moment when Michael asked him for the proof and bingo, there it is on the table (you know, the way Bill and Ted were able to escape from jail just in time to give their most excellent history presentation).

This instantaneous backward-forward consciousness time-traveling can explain many things: how Ben got that video tape in his safe, how Mr. Friendly knew where Michael would be when he committed suicide (which they stopped), etc etc.

And what if Ben really did give Michael a working bomb, and Michael really did blow up the freighter, but then in one of the Universe’s counter-moves, Ben realized that the destruction of the freighter actually worked against him, so he traveled back in time, deactivated the bomb, and put a little pop-up flag saying “not yet’ for Michael.

And since ghost-Libby and ghost-Charlie seem to be working against Ben, I am sticking to my theory that they are agents of the Universe trying to free the island (and Jacob) from Ben’s malevolent grasp.

Carl Bites the Dust

Well, as a father of two girls, I say he got what was coming to him. So who shot him and Rousseau? The freighter folk. You know, the guys who were “shooting stuff” in tonight’s episode. Remember, Frank Lapidus took them off the freighter last week. So now they are on the island, hunting. And Ben knew exactly where they would be, and he sent horny Carl and expendable Rousseau right into their path – but only after he gave Alex all the information she would need to save herself. It will be interesting to see how he uses the capture of Alex against them.

Mr. Friendly

It has been speculated since he told Kate that she “was not his type.” Now it has been confirmed. Okay, so Mr. Friendly is gay. Big deal.

Taller Ghost Walt

The Walt who appeared on the island to Locke was not really Walt. It was a manifestation of the island – maybe the smoke monster – encouraging Locke to get up and get to work. But the real Walt (or at least a body-double with real Walt’s CGI-imposed face) is with his grandmother in Manhattan.

Why Jack Couldn't Jump

When a badly-bearded suicidal Jack almost threw himself off a bridge last season, a car crashed behind him. The lure of saving someone was too strong, and he avoided an untimely death. Why? Because, like we found with Michael this week, he still has work to do, and "the island" won't let him die.

And, by the way, I still think that Michael is (will be) the man in the coffin.

I know there are at least four people who will read this. So what did you guys think of this episode? Did it raise any new questions for you? Let me know.

P.S. I am working on a website dedicated to flushing out my theory. It's a work in progress. Take a look at what I have so far and let me know what you think.

I was thinking of your theories as we watched last night and I agree that so far they make a whole lot of sense. I was glad that we got a lot more information last night-- I was really unhappy about Rouseau being shot-- She has protected herself there on the island for a very long time and all of a sudden-- I like the idea that the island is working against Ben to free Jacob and using people who have died to help-- It will be fascinating to see how Ben loses, because I think (hope) ultimately he will-- I also think Whidmore will lose and the island will get to go back to being itself-- Where do you think all the "others' are? Richard etc?

THAT is a very cool site!

The "others" are at the temple. They were traveling there, when John Locke was with them, when Ben made him kill his father. (I think I remember that correctly) I have to agree, that I really like your theories, as well. They make sense. It'll be fun to see how the story pans out. Also, LOVED your other site, as well. I'll be anxious to see the other "chess" player links. Question: Have I missed the story line about Annie or are those your theories? I only remember her when she was a kid, but I don't remember her marrying Ben, being pregnant with a son, and then dying. Where is that info?

Thanks mom and kris. I am adding more to that site all the time. It's fun. I put together a cohesive 'the story' and added it to the front page, and also added locke to the 'chess pieces' along with desmond and jacob (and of course the two main players, ben and the universe). I'll add more this weekend, too.

And no, Kris, you have not missed a storyline about Annie being pregnant, etc. That is my guess, and it could be wrong. The producers have said that she plays a MAJOR role in the decisions Ben makes and that there is much more to her story than what they have already shown, so I am putting myself in their position and writing what I think that story might be. But again, it could be wrong.

Ok, Dennis/Glenn/Stephen/Kevin, you have my utmost respect, for being able to see the entire picture together. I love your theory. I sometimes have a hard time keeping all the pieces straight and their interconnectivity. The things that I do gravitate towards are the symbols. Here are a couple of things I have noticed/been thinking of lately. I don't know if they really have any significance, but with Lost, you've gotta assume they do.

1. All of the main characters are dealing with some type of issues with a family member. The only exception is Hurley, unless you count him rushing to get back from Australia for his Mom's B-Day. Is there any real significance to this? I don't know maybe, but it just seems to be too much to discount.

2. September 22- Ok being a Libra (Sept 24) I know that this is the start of the Libra sign. The Libra is a scale, and Libra's are supposed to exhibit qualities of balance and harmony. I think this could play into your Chess Game Theory. I don't know if it has any real significance, but with all of the references to other things like I Ching, it makes me wonder. I know they are 2 totally unrelated things, but that date just sticks out to me every time they talk about it.

That's it. Let me know what you think about my observations.

"utmost"

That's a weird word. Ut. Hmmm...

And you forgot to add Kwithtofer, Victor, and Juan.

(and Miss Jackson if you're nasty)

But thanks, though. Here's my response to your observations:

1. The thing that hooked me into Lost from the very beginning (aside from the chance to gawk at Evangeline Lily) was the character development. I loved that you could take someone like Sawyer -- a real jerk -- and then milk some genuine sympathy out of him when you realize that HE was the damaged little kid who wrote that heart-wrenching letter. Awesome!

I think the family issues are just a natural part of the excellent character development (and I disagree about Hurley -- he has his mommy-daddy issues, too). Family members are the people we associate with the most (or at least the ones we have the most issues with, no matter how lovey-dovey or cutesie-tootsie or hottie-tottie they may be). So I don't think there is much more to the family issues than that excellent character development. But as a wannabe-creative person myself, I can imagine how much I would love to be able to really develop each detailed little piece of a much bigger board game. I mean, if my theory is right, then we went a season and a half before even introducing the main antagonist, and another season before introducing the real protagonist. We learned a lot about some key people, but have been drawn in to a wonderfully elaborate mystery. I love it.

2. The Libra connection is very cool. I would never have thought of that in a million years. The pilot actually aired on Sep 22, 2004, and they wanted to make it seem "current" so that was the date of the plane crash as well. I don't think they meant the Libra connection, but they have acknowledged a lot of connections that they didn't intend. This thing about "balance" is a really good one.

I love the Bill & Ted time travel connection! Totally Gnarly Dude! ( That is my fav. part of that movie, it seemed so cleaver & always wished I could do that). Maybe that's why I love LOST so much~

I was surprised to see that Michael & Walt really did go home. I wasn't expecting that. It made more sense though once Tom showed up to prove that they never really were "free". I couldn't see Ben letting them go.... I thought Walt was dead somehow.

It was really cool to see Mr. Friendly outside of the Island. Especially to think this was all while Jack, Sawyer & Kate were locked up. It makes me wonder who else of the others are in on "it".

Do you think the sub was the only way they were able to get off the Island? So now they really are trapped?
Before Ben said they never used it (the sub), he just had it so his people knew they could use it if they needed. That is a lie- some were coming and going from the Island as we see with Tom- it's possible he still has another way off. Maybe that's how the "oceanic 6" get home and it has nothing to do with the freighter's fake rescue. That would make sence as to Ben's hold on Sayid and how those from the two camps come together- Jack, Kate & Sun with Hurley & Aaron.
Hense the lie. Why would anyone on the frieghter make them lie about where they had been? That has Ben written all over it.
Is this already obvious to you and I am just now getting it?

What do you think of Sayid ratting out Michael? I almost think the captain knows about him already, maybe Michael told him. It just seems like the captain is very aware of what is happening on the boat. I think it would be difficult for "kevin Johnson" to break the engine & communication with out being caught, unless he had someone on his side. I could be totally off. He just didn't look all that surprised when Sayid told him.
I want to watch what the captain tells Des & Sayid about Ben & Widmore again. To see if there may be anything else there.

So now What's up with the month long break? DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THAT!!!

Can you tell I wrote that before I read your other site? Um.. yeah. I guess I was thinking to literal about Tom physically being off the Island instead of using "unsticking" powers.
And duh- Ben is behind the Oceanic 6.

I feel like Mom. "I didn't know that Ben & Rousseau were married. When did that happen? .... Well Alex is their daughter."
Sorry

OK, I also forgot Ixtlilxochitl, but I think I'll go with Miss Jackson. So it seems that the characters are not that much different than most people. Having some type of familial issues. I guess that is typical of most people, especially in this country.
